:: Short Form Synopsis ::
As young teenagers, Scott Rivers and Donna McGonigal found friendship and a sense of place in the summers they spent in Gibsons Landing, on British Columbia’s spectacular Sunshine Coast. Inseparable, they also found love, but were split apart by the manipulative third in their romantic triangle, Katt Reynard. Katt spent her time getting them into trouble with Constable Constable and trying to drive a wedge between them. She eventually succeeded. Now, after ten years of kicking around the world on his motorcycle, Scott has returned, determined to come to terms with his aimless wanderings and fulfil a promise he made to Nick Adonidas in Greece. Donna has also returned, with her ne'er-do-well father Dave in tow and a half-share of Molly’s Reach that she’s anxious to sell off. Gibsons is a brief stop on her way to the big city and a promising career in business. Seeing Scott however, forces her to evaluate her ambitions and question her feelings. A run in with Katt over the future of the decaying Molly’s Reach also confronts her with a tough choice. In the meantime Constable John Constable has been promoted, but is seriously considering retiring and moving away from his beloved community. With his 50th birthday looming, all his old friends gone and a wrecking ball poised over Molly’s Reach, life just doesn’t seem to be the same anymore.
:: Long Form Synopsis ::
Scott Rivers (Cam Bancroft) returns to Gibsons, on British Columbia’s spectacular Sunshine Coast, after 10 years of travel in foreign lands to find Molly’s Reach, that legendary diner above Smitty’s marina, condemned, boarded up, and about to be demolished. When Scott announces that he now holds Nick Adonidas’ lease to the small office inside the diner, he finds himself entangled in an old-fashioned romantic triangle, as well as a legal battle for the ownership of the Reach.
Donna McGonigal (Deanna Milligan) owns half of Molly’s Reach. Katt Reynard (Kendall Cross) owns the other half. Katt, aided by the manoeuvrings of George Rivers (Duncan Fraser), Scott’s estranged father and the town’s wily lawyer, wants to buy Donna’s half of the property for development. Donna would like to sell and it’s a smart business decision, particularly in light of the information let drop by the town’s resident eco activist and newspaper publisher Colin Reid (Graham Greene). However, things get complicated when Donna’s father, the legendary scam artist, self-proclaimed “creative financial entrepreneur” and unexpectedly talented chef, Dave McGonigal (Dave Thomas) announces his intention of reopening the diner against all village bylaws, court orders, and sound advice.
Donna also has a long-simmering feud with Katt to resolve, a feud which involves the newly-returned Scott Rivers. Donna was Scott’s teenage sweetheart until he broke her heart and left to see the world, and the devious Katt was instrumental in Scott and Donna’s break-up.
Scott, as the holder of Nick’s lease on the office in the Reach, wields the balance of power in the dispute between the two women, but in order to hang on to the title he has to re-establish Nick’s dormant salvage company within two days. He sets off on a perilous adventure to locate Nick’s old boat The Persephone, an expedition made even more difficult when Katt strands him on a deserted island. Scott is rescued by a colourful character named Smitty (Matt Walker) who helps him locate the leaky legend. With further assistance from Jesse (Pat John) and well wishes from Sara (Charlene Aleck) they get her floating again, but with the old log salvage boat leaking like a sieve, they have to break the journey, in Doober Creek. JJ’s Jug band (Valdy, Long John Baldry), and the other motley denizens of this anarchic enclave up the coast from Gibsons, offer a welcome respite from the knowledge that needed repairs are wasting valuable time in the race to save Molly’s Reach.
In the end, Scott makes it back with The Persephone, and Katt’s plan for tearing down the Reach is thwarted. Donna and her father reopen the Reach with the help of Staff Sergeant (formerly Constable) John Constable (Jackson Davies). He’s been looking for something worth doing after he retires from the RCMP, a question that’s been nagging him for a while, especially now that the young, by-the-book Constable Kelly Mah, is eager to take over his duties.
Scott and Donna have reached a level of understanding and forgiveness, and if they aren’t quite back to being sweethearts, there is a suggestion that things may warm up, eventually.
